Rasio kompresi mesin adalah perbandingan volume keseluruhan ruang silinder piston terhadap volume ruang bakar (saat piston berada di puncak atas / titik mati atas). Semakin tinggi nilai rasio kompresi ini, tentu akan semakin bagus, karena pemampatan yang semakin kuat, akan menimbulkan tekanan yang jauh lebih besar. Hanya saja kalau bahan bakar bernilai oktan rendah (titik ledak lebih rendah), maka akan meledak terlebih dahulu sebelum percikan api dari busi. Ledakan ini akan menembak kepala pison yang sedang bergerak menuju titik mati atas, gejala ini disebut knocking (ngelitik). Berikutnya terjadi ledakan kedua yaitu saat percikan busi terjadi. Dengan 2 ledakan ini, maka akan memperpendek usia mesin, terjadi pemborosan, tenaga loyo dan memperbanyak polusi. Di sinilah fungsi Norival untuk menambah nilai oktan, disesuaikan dengan daftar rasio kompresi di atas, sehingga pembakaran akan sempurna dan hanya terjadi sekali ledakan, yaitu saat terjadi percikan busi sesaat sebelum mencapat titik mati atas.
